Mob Psycho 100 Volume 2 ONE Kumar Sivasubramanian 9781506709888 Books Reviews

  • Middle-school student Shigeo Kageyama, aka "Mob", has superpowers. But his powers can't give him social skills -- or muscles to impress girls -- or help him solve math problems. He envies his younger brother Ritsu, who's good-looking, popular, tops in all his classes, an all-rounder in sports ... but Ritsu always expected that he would one day develop superpowers like his brother, and hasn't come to terms with the fact that that's not happening.

I was expecting this volume to more or less continue in the vein of the first book, with just-adequate art but an intriguing low-key story, with Shigeo mostly struggling with everyday challenges while being circled by people, and entities, who want to use him and his powers for their own ends, in particular Shigeo's employer/mentor, con man and flimflam artist Reigen, a phony "psychic" who calls in Mob whenever he comes up against a real ghost or spirit.

But ... halfway through this book events turn in a radically different direction, and about the last 90 pages of the main story are an apocalyptic battle between Shigeo and another "superhuman". It seems too early in this series for something like that, and the battle is a strange one in that Shigeo refuses to use his powers offensively against another person, even if that person is attacking him, while his opponent refuses to settle for a draw. In the course of the fight a character who made the story more interesting gets wiped out -- apparently; I'll read the third book when it comes out, and if that character survives after all I might revise this review a bit. Also during the battle, the teenager confronting Shigeo gets the top of his head shaved, and he looks like a weird old man for the rest of the episode. And the last chapter of the grimly serious fight is bookended by two pages of a vignette featuring Reigen which have a totally different tone, as do the two bonus stories that round out the book. It's enough to make a reader ask about author ONE -- as a ghost repeatedly asked about Reigen in the first book -- "what's with this guy?"
  • I love it, I think it’s thicker than the first volume.
  • MY favorite series.
  • I love this series!
