Why do some people pray in agreement with God’s will, heart and timing, yet the desired answers do not come? Why would God not respond when we pray from the earnestness of our hearts? What is the problem, or better yet, what is the solution?

Robert Henderson believes the answer is found in where your prayer actually takes place. We must direct our prayer towards the Courts of Heaven and not only the battlefield. Robert shows that it is in the courtrooms of Heaven where our breakthroughs can be found. When you learn to operate there you will see your answers unlocked and released.

This book will teach you the legal processes of Heaven and how to operate in its courts. When you get off the battlefield and into the courtroom you can grant God the legal clearance to fulfill His passion and answer your prayers.

"Over the years, I've purchased many Christian books, but in the last twelve years have limited myself to just a couple authors who I found most effective. "Courts of Heaven" was recommended to me by a friend who was teaching a class based on the book. Approaching God and prayer through heaven's court systems? It sounded intriguing. I've only read the first three and a half chapters as I am going through the information slowly and carefully, looking up the scriptures, wanting to absorb God's revelation. So far I am very impressed. Robert Henderson has tied scripture together with God's revelation in such a way that I am certain it will result in prayer breakthrough.

Over twenty years ago a pastor from Canada, Pastor Dennis Wiedrick, taught a "standing in the gap" form of intercessory prayer. I believe it was called "The Royal Priesthood." It taught various forms of prayer, but the most involved type necessitated allowing God to help the intercessor to feel the pain of another and then the intercessory could make the choice to repent of the negativity that was keeping the needy person in bondage. It was a powerful form of prayer and it worked, but most Christians didn't seem ready to apply it. I believe this book is God's timing to introduce a way to approach intercessory prayer, but the "Courts of Heaven" contains much more information. It includes not only personal intercession, but intercession for cities, businesses, and or nations and how intercede safely and effectively. If you've ever wondered why you've prayed for years with no answers forthcoming, you may find reasons for the silence in this information. It is a way to overcome the blockages to answered prayer as well as answering other questions you may have had concerning warfare prayer. Robert Henderson advocates making sure the scriptural legalities are addressed and dealt with before attempting warfare prayer. I have already learned so much and am expecting amazing things to come."

  • A Review of “Operating in the Courts of Heaven.”

I have been a Pentecostal-Charismatic pastor for 30 years. I do not consider myself a scholar, but only a diligent student who is zealous for both a move of God in his fullness and for biblical excellence. I am absolutely convinced that we should never read anything “uncritically,” where we do not ask the hard questions or challenge things. Here are some thoughts on this book.

AN EGREGIOUS VIOLATION OF SCRIPTURAL CONTEXT
I wish this could be a matter of “eating the fish and spitting out the bones,” in this case, however, the author gives us more bones than fish. Most of the Scriptures referred to throughout the book are bent out of their original meaning to support the author’s premise of the “heavenly court” and the “books in heaven.”
The author makes bizarre connections between specific scriptures and the doctrine he is purporting. In this case, he points out that “heaven is full of books” written about people, nations, apostolic networks and businesses, and that these books are filled with their destinies. He cites Hebrews 105-7 as an example where Christ comes “in the full volume of the book (or scroll),” implying that “the book” written about Christ was in heaven and Christ is fulfilling what is written in that book. David L. Allen, an authority on the book of Hebrews, points out that Hebrews 105-7 is referring to the Old Testament Scriptures as the “full volume of the book.” Jesus came to fulfill the Scriptures who point to him. David L. Allen, Hebrews, The New American Commentary (Nashville, TN B & H Publishing Group, 2010), 498.
The author takes Romans 829-30, a Scripture that most theologians have interpreted as God’s process of redemption, and attempts to force it into his “court of heaven” language (pp. 34-36).
    Romans 829–30 (NRSV)
29For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn within a large family.
30And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

The author also claims that Satan was part of the legal system in heaven; it was his job to gather evidence (Isa. 4325-28), (p. 61). This takes great license with this Scripture, totally distorting its meaning.
There are many other scriptures the author takes out of context. In some cases, he seems to simply make stuff up based on his own notions, not on responsible interpretation (Luke 181-8; Heb. 105-7; Dan. 710 (pp. 17, 24).

SHODDY WORK IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGES
I am by no means a Greek or Hebrew scholar; I rely on the powerful tools to help me understand basic Hebrew and Greek terms.
An example can be found in the author’s use of the word “workmanship” (as in “we are his workmanship” in Ephesians 210). The author claims that the word ‘workmanship’ in the Greek means “poem” (p. 27). This simply is not true no matter which Greek lexicon you use (and I own quite a few). The popular Strong’s Lexicon has it this way “A thing (or product) that is made,” “that which has been made,” or “of the works of God as creator.” Nowhere do you find the idea that “workmanship” is in any way associated with being a poem, this notion is made up to support the idea of the “books in heaven.”

    DANGEROUS ASSUMPTIONS
The author cites Genesis 126, “let us make man in our own image,” concluding that there was a discussion in “the Council of heaven” about the creation of man. He concludes that “books were written about the destiny of the earth, man, and God’s creation.” (p. 29). How does one extract such ideas from this Scripture? This has very much the same feel as when a person’s image is photoshopped into a picture; it looks almost plausible if you don’t pay attention, but then you realize that it doesn’t really fit.
The author adds that (according to Jewish beliefs) “we were spirit beings and part of the Council of heaven” before we were born. (p. 29). That we were part of this heavenly board meeting that decided the plan for the world. This would imply that we were part of the group that said, “let us make man in our own image.”

WE SHOULD LISTEN TO WHAT WE WRITE
We’ve all heard the saying, “Listen to yourself talking.” In this case, we should always listen to what we write. How does it sound, how does it come across? The author speaks of contending for the books of nations, citing an experience he had when he had to contend for “the book of destiny for Germany.” (p. 41).
We ask the question once more, how does this sound? What impression does it leave for an unbeliever, or skeptic, or a seeker when they hear something like this? Does it sound humble, or arrogant to assume that you know there is a book to contend for in another country and that you are the ones to contend for it? How do you know if it worked? What of other faithful intercessors in Germany who have given their lives praying and dying for their country? Did they fail because they missed this principle? What happens to the rest of the body of Christ, Catholics, Lutherans, Wesleyans, who will never read this book? Are they out of luck because they do not have this revelation? What of Christians who are just barely surviving with their prayer lives because of circumstances, trials, or insane schedules? Will they never know breakthrough or victory because they have not employed this teaching? Did 9/11 happen because we did not have this teaching, or as the author states “the principalities and powers were granted legal rights to attack America because there was no ecclesia or governmental people recognized in heaven at the time to start it” (p. 146)? Did Auschwitz happen because we did not have a “governmental people recognized in heaven”? What of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ethnic cleansing, and the persecuted church in Asia and the Middle East? Do these things happen because of negative “judicial activity in the courts of heaven”?

WE CANNOT PLACE OUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES ABOVE THE WORD OF GOD
The author repeatedly cites experiences as absolute revelation for the whole body of Christ. (p. 80). As a charismatic, I strongly believe in personal experiences, revelations, visions, and dreams God gives us, but these experiences should not always be shared. They should only be shared as revelation for the whole body of Christ if they are in line with the word of God because no Scripture is a private interpretation (2 Pet 120). Scriptures cannot be modified to accommodate our experience; our experience must conform to the Scriptures.
SOMETIMES GOD ALLOWS US TO LIVE OUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR CHOICES
The author tells a touching story of the young man who got into a fight and was found guilty of misdemeanor and assault. Upon facing possible jail time, the young man was told about the “court of heaven” principle and taken through the steps and “answering the accusations in the court of heaven.” All of the consequences were reversed in the real-world court, and the young man walked free. We are blessed to hear such a story of someone receiving mercy when they should’ve gotten justice, but can we suggest that people never face the consequences of their choices? If I commit a heinous act and am guilty as charged, can I go to “the court of heaven” and get that verdict reversed every time? The answer is no, though God forgives us, God allows consequences into our lives to remind us of where we have been and never to repeat that violation again. This is called the law of sowing and reaping (Gal. 67-8) (p. 117).

A COUPLE OF GOOD POINTS MADE IN THE BOOK
We accomplish God’s will by resting in him, not by striving. (p. 109). “Jesus is our intercessor comforter and counselor.” “The longer we walk with Jesus, the more we learn to say ‘no’ to sin.” (p. 113). The author makes a good observation about our “metron” (sphere of influence) but again fixates on his courtroom language, instead of the real context of the Scripture which is our ministry gifts (2 Cor. 1013) (p. 150).

    CONCLUDING REMARKS
The author’s detailed description of the courtroom and all its levels, and the different levels of heaven, result in this dizzying complex system that could intimidate the most confident. This courtroom system scenario becomes a charismatic form of legalism that if we don’t get just right, we will not have the breakthrough we are looking for. This system he proposes is so complex and convoluted that it is a wonder anyone could follow it.
He takes definitions that have been established for millennia in reputable commentaries, dictionaries and lexicons and ignorers their meanings. He superimposes his model of the courtroom over most Scriptures he mentions, ignoring the Scripture’s context.
He inserts his idea of “books” into many scriptures he uses, twisting any Scripture to accommodate his idea. Can we force our meanings onto the Scriptures?
Pentecostal theologian Gordon Fee once said, “A text can never mean what it never meant.”

A REVELATION SHOULD BE JUDGED BY PRESENT AND PAST CONSENSUS.
The Body of Christ, whether it is a network we belong to, denomination, or accountable group should judge revelations being put forth as truth.
Let us not forget the Fathers who came before us, the ones who fought, debated, and died for the Bible we hold in our hands. They have a lot to say about the standards of interpretation we should follow.
  • A life saver. An answer to why prayers have not been answered. A new sense of the authority Jesus gave us and how to apprehend it. A revolutionary must for every believer.

  • His whole premise is based on a misinterpretation of the word court. This book furthers the idea that your effort and procedures make God do what you want. This is a misrepresentation of what prayer is. This is a dangerous book to new and immature Christians.
  • This book is amazing and answers the question, "Why are my prayers not being answered?" So few understand that God's Kingdom is a kingdom with laws as well as privileges. God is righteous and just and He responds based on these two factors. The devil is an accuser and he is always bringing accusations about us to God. Many of these accusations are un-refuted because we don't even show up for a defense! If you don't show up for court you lose! This book shows us God's legal system and how to defend yourself against Satan's accusations. Once we understand this fundamental principle the heavens can begin to LEGALLY move on our behalf! This is a MUST read for EVERY serious believer!
  • The man isn't the best author but he certainly had a message. I have a much clearer understanding of the heavenly court system and the legal proceedings that one can navigate through to obtain a favorable verdict. Something most of us can benefit from.
